Kind Living

KissKind Living is a project of the creative husband and wife team of Andy Smallman & Melinda Shaw.

In 1990 they married. Some say they eloped but the wedding was well-planned. Other than two friends they playfully duped into being their witnesses, they didn't invite anyone to the ceremony.

In 1994 they gave up their jobs to create the Puget Sound Community School. They had an infant, a mortgage, no savings to speak of and gave up their sources of guaranteed income to start a venture that conventional wisdom said would not work. It has.

In 1998 they bought a fixer-upper house in Seattle. They now had a 5 year-old, a 1 year-old, a burgeoning school, a bigger mortgage and still no savings to speak of. But that didn't stop the remodeling, most of which was done by them.

From 2001-2008 they moved the school four times, each time improving on the quality and design of the school's physical environment.

In 2011 they launched Kind Living while on sabbatical in France with their teenaged daughters. The venture is a blending of education, design, and remodeling of an internal sort.

Each in their own way and together, they work to create environments that inspire.
