Anonymous Kindness : Reflection #1

1 – Do Something Small

“A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labours of a spasmodic Hercules.” -Anthony Trollope

I begin with the quote above from Anthony Trollope, emphasizing the significance of small acts. This reflects the essence of this module, underscoring the potential impact of seemingly minor actions.

I recall an interview with a newspaper reporter discussing my online kindness classes, rooted in the “Butterfly Effect.” This concept illustrates how small actions can trigger significant outcomes. I think it’s relevant to all of our lives, not just this module.

When introducing this theme in my “live” classes, participants often expect grand acts of kindness, but I prefer to guide people inward. The scale of your actions isn’t the focus; let them emanate from a place brimming with positive energy. As one class member noted, giving $1 with love surpasses giving $10 begrudgingly. The key is the connection to “spirit.”

Some participants may struggle with full anonymity. I encourage you not to let anonymity obstruct opportunities. In my work with teens, I suggest that breaking a rule is acceptable if the underlying principle is upheld. Similarly, with kindness, if your actions stem from a loving place rather than for show or reward, you honor the essence of this module, whether done anonymously or in public.
