Kindness Blessings – Reflection #4

“I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep.” –Norman Cousins

A Kind Living student once referenced psychoneuroimmunology, which explores the influence of our thoughts on our immune system. This concept underscores the importance of our attitudes in shaping our health. We can actively control the impact of our experiences on our well-being, embracing our emotions without dwelling on negativity.

Another student shared how one interaction triggered a cascade of negative thoughts. It’s this chain reaction of negativity that causes harm, and we can change it. Recognizing that people’s behavior reflects them, not us, empowers us to manage our reactions. Rather than saying, “You make me so mad,” we take responsibility for our responses.

To self-reflect, we should note what annoys us and seek to understand why. For instance, the annoyance of navigating crowded sidewalks can be an opportunity to learn about ourselves. Examining our reactions may reveal feelings of being undervalued or unseen. Shifting our perspective allows us to transform these encounters into opportunities for kindness and self-improvement.

In line with psychoneuroimmunology, such positive shifts in attitude can enhance our immune system and overall health. Forgiveness, the theme of the week, ultimately serves as an act of kindness to ourselves, promoting better well-being.
