Undivided Kindness – Assignment #6

The Truth Told Slant

“As soon as we succumb to someone else’s definition of who we are, we lose our sense of true self and our right relation to the world.”

Reading: Read Chapter Six. Follow any of my usual suggestions about the reading that have appealed to you. This week, when you get to page 95, “The Taoist Tale,” I suggest closing your book before going on. Consider changing locales, getting a cup of tea, or otherwise doing something refreshing that causes you to pause for a few minutes before continuing.

Kind Action: Take some time to consider something in your life that has served or could serve as a “third thing” (see the bottom of page 92 for a definition). Given its importance to you and in the spirit of kindness, pick a person with whom you can share it and then do so.

Wholeness Journal: In the section “Naming Our Own Truth,” Palmer refers to something he calls “projections.” Consider what he means by this in terms of your life, perhaps using the questions on page 103 as a guide:

  • What projections surround me?
  • Where do they come from?
  • What drives them?
  • How do they distort my sense of self?
  • How am I dealing with them, and how might I deal with them better?
  • How can I name and claim my own truth?
