Undivided Kindness – Thoughts #7

Deep Speaks to Deep

“The more we know about another’s story, the harder it is to hate or harm that person.”

Parker’s “Counterculture Rule” is: “No fixing, no saving, no advising, no setting each other straight.”

However, what about genuinely unhealthy choices?

While the rule isn’t absolute — we must intervene in genuine emergencies — we risk imposing our perceptions. We may misinterpret situations, creating problems where none existed.

This is common with parents who want to shield their children from their own mistakes. Yet, we also understand the value of allowing children to learn independently, like a toddler learning to eat.

Essentially, the Counterculture Rule promotes freedom and support. We must discern real danger from perceived danger, acknowledging our bias towards seeing threats. Ultimately, people must live their own lives.
