(Andy is facilitating an 4 session in-person kindness class on Wednesday nights using Rachel Naomi Remen’s book “My Grandfather’s Blessings”. The weekly assignments are being posted here for those in the class, and for anyone else interested in following along.)
ASSIGNMENT #1 — for April 30
“How filled with awe is this place and we did not know it.”
READING: Read the introduction, Section I and Section II. Consider reading with a highlighter pen to mark your favorite passages. Allow Remen’s words the room to find your spark of life, to blow on it, if you will. Read slowly and allow your mind to move toward stories in your life triggered by the reading. Pay attention to these stories, trusting they have something important to teach you.
KIND ACTION: Consider the miraculous in every day things. If you get a cut, how is that it can heal? In biting into a fresh apple, how is it that it was grown? In smelling a flower, how did it get its fragrance? Be filled with awe and wonder this week, even at the simplest of things. Having practiced this for a few days, take some time to write up one of your awe-inspired moments as a kindness to yourself.
BLESSINGS JOURNAL: Begin a “Blessings Journal.” This is a small notebook that you can fit in a pocket or purse and along with a pen be a place where you record the blessings you receive that you might otherwise miss. The driver waving you through the intersection, the smile from the cashier at the grocery store, someone going out of her way to answer your question.
